The Wrap | Costume Designers Guild Awards
The Costume Designers Guild has nominated 15 different movies for the 21st Costume Designers Guild Awards, singling out two films about the Stuart line of English monarchs, two based in the rock and funk of the 1970s, three about superheroes and others about Abba-singing lovers, female thieves and crazy rich Asians.
In recent years, the Costume Designers Guild has typically nominated three or four of the films that have gone on to receive Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design. Those nominees almost always come from the period and fantasy categories.
Last year, three of the five Oscar nominees were first nominated by the CDG, two from the period category and one from the fantasy category.
Since the CDG split into its separate contemporary, period and fantasy categories in 2005, nominees in its period category have gone on to receive 36 Oscar nominations and 10 wins. The fantasy category has yielded 11 nominees and three winners, while the contemporary category has only resulted in three Oscar nominees and no winners in 12 years.
In the four television categories, nominees included “The Assassination of Gianni Versace,” “The Romanoffs,” “Sharp Objects,” “The Alienist,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events,” “Westworld,” “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
